Gretta takes a look at Les Miserable as part of her ongoing series on the 2013 Oscar nominees.  Through the overall context of communication, she explores how the absence of meaningful dialogue can lead to misery and revolution, both then and now.

Below are the two photos that Gretta refers to during her discussion and the movie trailer for Les Miserables.

Focused Moment for January 13, 2013

Gretta's inspiration for this reflection was these words by Hannah Arendt describing her friend, German philosopher Karl Jaspers: "Jaspers exemplified in himself, as it were, a fusion of freedom, reason, and communication."
This focusing moment is the product of that inspiration.  For more see www.grettavosper.ca

Today, Gretta highlighted how the idea of "sermon" morphed into "meditation", at West Hill. It was a term coined by a previous minister, Bruce Sanguin.

Gretta offered a new term, which we're going to test drive: "perspective". She noted that this meditation/sermon is her perspective and it is only a jumping off point for a wider conversation.

This is her perspective for January 13, 2013.

Gretta opens her heart and shares her heartbreak for those who suffer.  She lifts up three examples: the plight of our Aboriginal communities, the 20 children and 6 teachers who were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Ct., and the abysmal conditions found in factory pig farms.

In her discussion, she is direct. She is impassioned. She is encoueraging us to stretch our hearts.  It may not be easy to listen to, it may be too blunt.  But it's important we do listen and discuss these issues, reflecting on how we wish to move forward as individuals and perhaps as a community.

December 2, 2012 - Affirming Anniversary

In 2009, West Hill became an Affirming ministry within the United Church of Canada, publicly and vocally standing in solidarity as allies of the LGBTQ community.  This Sunday, we celebrate the third anniversary of our commitment to be Affirming.

As part of this celebration, we are thrilled to welcome guest speaker Kamal Al Solaylee, author of the award-nominated Intolerable. Kamal’s harrowing memoir describes his ihrab - his escape - from the increasingly fundamentalist Arab world in which he grew up. Gay and unable to share his reality with even the closest members of his family, he carried the emotional burden of his escape with him to Canada, particularly the recognition that, in making it, he left behind his mother and sisters for whom life had also become close to intolerable.
