Our May 17th In the Spirit guest speaker, Ms. Suji David, from The Storefront on Lawrence Ave. East has provided us with copies for our library of two recently compiled booklets of local community resources.

"Help Right in Your  Neighbourhood" details the accessible services available from 35  organizations at the Storefront location.

"Seasonal Resource Guide, Summer 2009" contains emergency information plus a comprehensive listing of activities for children, teens, youth, including day camps, sports, Parks & Rec. programs, library programs, and local events.  As well as volunteer opportunities for high school students. Contact the Storefront Volunteer Dept. at 416.208.7897.

For those who attended this Sunday's (April 5th) installment of In The Spirit ("Non-negotiables"), here is the list that John DiPede produced from the feedback he received from participants.  See John's explanation and comments below.

Features of West Hill United Church

At last years United Church National Conference Bruce Sanguin, WHUC pastor prior to Gretta, gave a workshop on The Emerging Church. He talked a little about trying to discover what congregants feel are their "non-negotiables" - "essential elements" - "just gotta have's", when they join and stay with a church. Coupled with the work that we are doing on developing a new Mission Statement and the small group that is looking at updating our VisionWorks document, learning more about what folks felt were their non-negotiables seemed like a good fit.

On Sunday morning about a dozen gathered in the lounge to try to first to define what a "non-negotiable" really was and then to offer their thoughts on what this meant to them at WHUC. We dealt with things: physical, spiritual, emotional and even intellectual. The time flew by and as we came to a close we all agreed that we had an interesting list. Take a look through it and see if anything resonates with you. We reflected a bit and acknowledged that we all had different views on what we see as essential elements of our church connection.

Thank you to all who attended. That extra hour makes for a longer Sunday morning however the time is always well spent.

Looking forward to seeing you at the next In The Spirit workshop
