Grown Ups
Book Study
For over twentyfive years, between January and May of each year, on alternating Friday evenings, a group of enthusiastic learners has gathered in the lounge of West Hill United Church to uncover the kernels of wisdom found in that year's chosen book. Titles studied in the past include Scott Peck's The Road Less Travelled, Tom Harpur's For Christ's Sake, Riane Eisler's The Chalice and the Blade and John Shelby Spong's A New Christianity for a New World. Because each book has had a provocative edge to it, the Book Study Group has been the crucible within which much of the theological shift that the congregation has seen over those twenty years has taken place.
The adult study programs offered at West Hill United Church are open to any who are interested in respectfully engaging the Bible, church history, theology, and the many ways we are challenged to live radically ethical lives. Sometimes you'll be drawn to a book study, others to an opportunity to explore an ancient or contemporary spiritual tool. Perhaps it will be with your partner, perhaps with your kids. Whatever you engage at West Hill, if you approach it with a spirit of discovery, an open mind, and a willingness to explore diverse perspectives, we're sure you'll find it rewarding.
On January 6, 2012 we began taking a look at Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life by Karen Armstrong. Coming soon, check out resources page for the study guide put together by Janice Meighan.
Participants are not always West Hill congregants and the Book Study is always open to new voices so please do join us for an intriguing and animated discussion. The book study takes place in the lounge at West Hill from 7:30 to 10:00 on alternating Fridays. You don't need to have come to the first to still join us. You can pop in mid-way through. Check out our calendar to find out the next time the book study is meeting.
To be added to the email list or find out more about the study, please contact Nona Joiner through the church office.
